How To Install An Attic Fan

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Attic fan installation is an easy project for experienced do-it-yourselfers and those with experience in home renovations. If you are not an experienced craftsman, do not try to install an attic fan without the help of an expert as you may inadvertently cause severe damage to your home.

To install your new QuietCool AFR attic fan, you'll first need to gather your tools. Here's what you'll need:

  • Pencil

  • Tape Measure

  • Self-Taping Screws

  • Rubber Bonded Washer

  • Electric Drill

  • Phillips Drill Bit

  • Screwdriver or Awl

  • Hammer

  • Crowbar

  • Ladder

  • Reciprocating Saw

  • Weatherproof Roofing Sealant

Next, gather your attic fan components and read through your QuietCool attic fan owners manual to ensure you understand all of the steps and requirements before your installation.

Inside your attic, find the location where your attic fan will be installed. The QuietCool AFR attic fan power cord come in 20ft length. Make sure your fan is close enough to an outlet in your Attic. Once the location is identified, use the tape measure to find the center between the two rafters where the attic fan will be installed — mark it as the center of the vent hole. Partially insert a screw into the center.

Go to your roof. Using the screw as a reference point, center the template included in with your attic fan over the screw, and trace out a 16" diameter circle.

Use the reciprocating saw to cut out the traced circle. Remove the cutout.

Remove the screws on the top of your QuietCool AFR attic fan roof cap.

Use a crowbar to lift up the shingles surrounding the vent cutout. Then, slide the fan unit underneath the shingles until the fan reaches the top of the hole.

Once the fan is in place, apply weather proof caulking to the bottom side of the fan unit. Secure the fan flashing to the roof. Finish caulking around the fan and flashing to make a nice seal. Reattach the attic fan roof cap with the accompanying screws.

Back inside your attic, secure the attic fan wiring box to the ceiling joist and secure the wiring box lid.

Once your fan is connected to power, your attic fan installation is complete!
